In this era of the rise of the Tea Party there are two concepts in short supply and those are Compromise and Consensus.   Yet, the very essence of government demands it.

Ted Cruz’s filibuster of the budget bill (http://www.nationaljournal.com/s/69852/more-than-21-hours-later-ted-cruz-has-been-cut-off) and his reading of children’s books to accomplish this, was theater of the absurd; but it was not that different from the obstruction and disfunction the Republican Party has thrown up as Public Policy since Nixon’s Southern Strategy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy) and Reagan’s “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help” (http://www.reaganfoundation.org/reagan-quotes-detail.aspx?tx=2079).  The meanness of politics was bad in the 1800 election, but it calmed down after WWII.  So that the rise of the Lee Atwater (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Atwater)/Karl Rove/Ralph Reed/Jack Abramoff types was kind of shocking but is now the norm for the Republican Party.

 

These things do not define who we are but do they expose who we are?
