I’m 58 and have voted since 1976. But as far as a Presidential Election, and in fact any election, this one has been the absolute worst. The ugliest, most foul, putrid display of kneecapping politics. A downright brawl with revelations about Trump in particular that Republicans refuse to disavow or distance themselves from—and they receive very little backlash from this. We are all so entrenched, that like Trump said: he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue in Manhattan and get away with it.
I know that Lee Atwater did very nasty stuff like this for the two Bushes (“McCain fathered a Black child” ads in South Carolina), but I just saw it after the fact and not in real time. The three debates were unbelievable in their lack of answers to issues and in the posturing of the candidates and their hemming and hawing, bickering and the general inability of the moderators to get control (just turn off their microphones —damn it!).
So what happens on November 9th and after Inauguration Day? How do we heal this country? how do we deal with the “deplorables” on both sides?
We really need to re-establish Trust in Government. I know after this election it seems like there is no hope left. Both sides are pretty fed up. Obstructionism as a method of governance will do this. We need to figure out a way to heal like (Black) Marianne Williamson did after Florida 2000. The disenfranchisement of Black people in Florida was the topic of talks in the NAACP for the next four years. Maybe this can also help: https://williamhenrymee.wordpress.com/2016/10/17/trust-in-government/
Barbara Ehrenreich’s article: Forget fear and loathing. The US election inspires projectile vomiting: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/03/us-election-projectile-vomiting-barbara-ehrenreich, is a good start. She says: “The most sordid side of our democracy has been laid out for all to see. But that’s only the beginning: whoever wins, the mutual revulsion will only intensify.” Then this is the main problem how to deal with the KKK and those extremists mainly on the right that feel the country is broken and only revolution will achieve their means. How do we get them to slide back into the woodwork, after they have rises their ugly heads for Trump? Because from all indicators these are dangerous people and they are angry.
The Black Lives Movement was denied by many White people who felt that racism no longer existed in this country. Many unemployed, underemployed and losing houses and pensions and just opportunities in general. Most times better economic conditions can help but this is almost like Germany 1933.
Pray?
A parallel in American history is the rise of the Ku Klux Klan under Republican D.C. Stephenson in Indiana. He had 8 million KKK members nationwide and they had a million man march in Washington, D.C. They were planning to have him run for President in 1928 because Coolidge was a weak leader. His rape charge (almost like Trump) kept him from doing this and by the 1928 election only 10,000 men were still KKK members. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._C._Stephenson
So it just evaporated away when the strong man was defeated.
I wrote a little bit about it above, but it will be a challenge to the next President and Congress, now matter who they are; and elected officials all the way up and down the line. The Do Nothing Republicans and their “scorched earth” policy of campaigning may result in a perceived “open revolution” by Trump supporters and Bernie Sanders supporters reacting to the Trump power play. Add to this the concealed carry factor and you have bad times ahead. Clinton people in the middle will be forced to also react.
This election is so strange because what one candidate complains about the other is also often their weak point. For example: Donald Trump has about twice as many women that he has groped, sexually assaulted or even raped as former President Bill Clinton (I don’t think Bill is running but also I think his cases have run out their statutes of limitation or have already been litigated). Then Trump’s Foundation is a complete sham—but the Clinton’s Foundation has some black marks against it also. Trump’s road to wealth is littered with broken contracts, fraud, use of the Mafia, bankruptcies, etc., but the sudden rise in the Clinton’s wealth is also questionable. The character of Trump and Clinton has been an issue and it should be if they are competing for Commander in Chief—but it seems that it is a narcissistic and psychotic bully versus a cold, calculating politician. The world can live (continue to exist?) with a politician.
Will Republicans respect democracy?https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/republicans-mull-the-nuclear-option/2016/11/05/180321c2-a2bc-11e6-8832-23a007c77bb4_story.html?postshare=1171478443226594&tid=ss_fb
the answer right now seems to be:
I don’t think they will. They certainly haven’t the past 8 years (McConnell vowing to make Obama a one-term President, 64 attempts to repeal the ACA, the meeting in a Washington Bar on Inauguration Day by Republicans to obstruct everything, the debate between Senators Coryn and Demint in Miami in front of the billionaires to obstruct everything.

Oh, this is just an overworked lawyer with those 3,500 lawsuits for or against Trump. Imagine, most Americans go through life with zero lawsuits. Even other businessmen maybe only have 10 in their entire lifetimes. This is another character flaw of this man. How as President can he fend off this legal onslaught?
It is really a sad time to be an American—the anger and frustration on both sides, but the extreme hate and violence only seems to be on the Trump side: http://politicaldig.com/shoot-the-btch-hang-the-ngger-unfiltered-rally-videos-show-trumps-america/

I know we talk about the Adams -Jefferson election of 1800 and the Jackson election of 1820 as being very uncivil. But this election showing Hillary as a witch and a pagan Wichan is very extreme.
People are posting that the Republican Great Depression of 1929 and the Republican Great Recession of 2008 were caused by Republicans. I believe the Great Panic of 1893 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1893) was also caused by Republicans as was 1873: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1873. Thankfully, they didn’t exist in the panics of 1857 and 1837.
Saw Van Jones on ABC’s This Week on November 13, 2016 and he a Black man said he had a WHITE WOMAN wife. I was kind of shocked because when he was being attacked for advancing a green agenda under President Obama, he was deemed a “homosexual Muslim” in some relentless attacks by Fox News. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Jones. Now I know why they attacked him this way in early 2009. Because it was like attacking Obama directly, another Black attorney concerned about the environment. They couldn’t in the Pre-Trump era attack him as a Black man with WHITE WOMAN wife; but they could make up lies about him and achieve the same results. Like taking some lessons from Josef Goebbels.

What about the other 3,500 lawsuits that Trump is in?
